A presentation ceremony and press conference have been organized for the new head coach of the Azerbaijani national team, Fernando Santos. The event was held at the Hilton Hotel and was attended by the AFFA Executive Vice President, officials and media representatives.
Sarkhan Hajiyev noted in his speech that the Portuguese specialist had achieved successful results in a number of national teams: “Fernando Santos is a world-famous coach and has achieved a number of achievements. He implemented his project in the Greek national team and led the team to the 2014 World Cup. He also won European Championship with the Portuguese national team in 2016. He is an expert who does not admit defeat. Some of these points were taken into account by the Executive Committee when making the decision. We believe that the cooperation will be successful and positive results will be achieved in the long term. The main goal is a successful performance at the qualifying stage of EURO 2028.
Fernando Santos, in turn, said that he believes in success with the Azerbaijani national team: “I thank AFFA for their trust. The presented project played an important role in my decision. I am here today because the management believes that I will implement this project. We hope achieve our goals with the support of all of you. We are here to run a successful business. We will try to participate in the final stages of major tournaments. Our goal is to qualify for the 2028 European Championship. We will live in Azerbaijan with our family to realize this project. We will need the support of the fans."
Note that the contract period with Fernando Santos is “3+1” years.
