Emin Mahmudov, captain of Azerbaijan national team set a historical record by scoring a goal during the 2026 FIFA World Cup European qualifiers match against Ukraine.
The midfielder became top-scorer in the national team by bringing a number of his goals to 15. He broke the 21-year-old record set by former striker Gurban Gurbanov. Head coach of FC Qarabag scored 14 goals in 68 matches he played for the national team between 1992 and 2005.
Gurbanov scored his last goal in 2004 during the friendly match against Latvia (2-2). Emin Mahmudov scored 15 goals in his 56th match for Azerbaijan national team, he played for since 2016.
