The next meeting of FIFA Council was held on October 2. According to the decision of the Executive Committee, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan will co-host the FIFA U-20 World Cup Finals in 2027.
This historic achievement is the result of the successful sports policy of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, and the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, including the attention they have paid to the development of football in the countries.
We would like to express our gratitude to the members of FIFA Council, especially to the President, Mr. Gianni Infantino, for their high level of trust and confidence.
Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan will co-host the 25th edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which has been staged every two years since the inaugural tournament in 1977. This edition of the tournament will be the first time in the history of football that the men's World Cup will be organized in Azerbaijan. Also, for the first time, the Azerbaijan men's national team will participate in the World Cup Finals.
In the twenty-three editions of the tournament held, twelve nations have won the title. Argentina is the most successful team with six titles, followed by Brazil with five titles. Portugal and Serbia have both won two titles, while Uruguay, Ghana, Spain, Russia, Germany, England, France and Ukraine have won the trophy once each. FIFA bills the men's Under-20 World Cup as “the tournament of tomorrow's superstars.”
The twenty-fourth World Cup, currently being held in Chile, features 24 national teams divided into six groups. The reigning champions are Uruguay, which won their first title at the 2023 tournament in Argentina.
