Aykhan Abbasov, head coach of Azerbaijan national team, expressed his thoughts during the post-match press conference after the final match (1-1, 9-8 on penalties) against Sierra Leone at Mehdi Huseynzada Sumgayit City Stadium played within the FIFA Series 2026 Azerbaijan edition.
“First, I would like to thank our fans. There was a great atmosphere in the stadium. We knew that the second game would be different from the first match. In the first half, we could not be as aggressive in attack as we wanted. We started the second half with substitutions. After the break, the players' desire increased even more. The penalty shootout was interesting for the fans. We are happy to be the winner of the tournament. However, the match showed that the stronger the opponent, the more we must improve. We will also try to prepare for the Nations League by spending the training camp in the summer usefully”.
Note that Azerbaijan national team won 6-1 over St Lucia in the first match of the tournament.
